Before you can apply for your licence -
You are required to read a number plate the required legal distance.
The distance requirement for the eyesight test using the old style number plates is 20.5 metres.
The distance requirement for the eyesight test using the new style number plates is 20 metres.
(New-style number plates are easily identifiable starting with two letters e.g. AB 51 ABC)
Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday. You can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday however, you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.
If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday.
What if I can’t find these documents?
Unfortunately, you are required by law to have both parts of your license and you are not allowed to take driving lessons or practical tests without them.
If these are not produced the driving lesson can’t start.
(The lesson will have to be paid for)
You can apply and replace your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office® branches
